The “Concordia Journalists’ and Writers’ Association” was founded in Vienna in 1859. To this day it defends press freedom, cultivates civil discourse, and advocates for responsible journalism.
In 1863, Concordia organised a grand dance event. It was meant to reflect the growing importance of free journalism for society. The Concordia Ball was thus born, and it soon became the highlight of Vienna’s festival season. The Strauss family dedicated a number of compositions to Concordia, and waltz king Johann Strauss delighted the crowd by personally conducting the orchestra on many a legendary Concordia Ball night. Today more than ever, the Concordia Press Club is committed to keeping journalism free and vibrant. 160 years after its first launch, the traditional summer ball of the Press Club Concordia was once again dedicated to press and media freedom. Together with a community of cosmopolitan and elegant ball participants – almost 3,000 this year – the media, arts and culture sector once again stood together in support of free journalism.
Join us again next year for a night of music, dancing and lively conversation in Vienna on Friday, 24 May 2024! |
